Graduates / Undergraduates / Year OutsStudying for the APC is a two-year process and requires you to keep a diary of your experience and to fulfil the requirements of the competencies set by the RICS. The APC is quite unlike any exam or test sat during your previous studies, the final assessment being a formal interview in front of a panel of three chartered surveyors, which is designed to test your knowledge and ability to represent the profession worldwide. Further details of the training and development are available in the section National Graduate Development Scheme.
We are interested in graduates with a Quantity Surveying or Project Management degree but we also recruit a number of graduates with other construction-related subjects or non-related degrees such as Geography, Maths or Economics. Year out Placement If you are studying a sandwich degree you can apply to join for your placement year. The placement typically lasts for 12 months, although we are happy to discuss requests for this to be for alternative lengths of time. The experience and responsibility you get will be the same as if you had joined us as a graduate and you will be working on the same kind of projects as your graduate colleagues. You can become a student member of the RICS shortly after joining the Firm and this can form the first stage of your career. After becoming a student member of the RICS you will be able to start your diary and log book and this first year of experience can be recorded to count towards your APC exam. We will assist you in completing your interim submission by the time you leave allowing you to qualify only one year after joining us as a full time employee. We may even provide sponsorship when you return to university. Cognate graduate profile Non-Cognate graduate profile Year out placement profile Graduate Project Manager We have a small number of vacancies for Graduate Project Managers. We look for individuals with either a first degree or postgraduate qualification in Project Management and preferably some relevant work experience. As a Graduate Project Manager you will join the general National Graduate Development Scheme but additional training is also provided. Please see the National Graduate Development Scheme for more details. Project manager profile: Trainees / Summer Students / Work Experience Trainees Individuals who wish to take a vocational route into the profession can apply to join us as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor. This programme involves studying a construction related course on a day-release basis with the remainder of the week spent at work. The duration of the course is dependent on whether you have taken GCSE’s and/or A-Levels, or equivalent. This study could progress to you undertaking a part-time RICS accredited degree programme in Quantity Surveying which can take up to five years to complete. You will learn standard skills such as cost control, measurement, design principles, health, safety and welfare and management principles. G&T can sponsor you through the necessary college and degree course and give you support to complete your studies. Trainee profile Summer Placements Summer placements with G&T are a great opportunity for those considering a career in surveying. Your time with the firm will enable you to gain important experience and an all round appreciation for the industry and profession thereby aiding you in your career decisions. A summer placement is normally allocated for a period of two to three months (negotiable). Our placements offer you the chance to get involved with a team of qualified surveyors, sharing in their work and projects. Summer placement profile If you join G&T for work experience you will be involved in two weeks of structured work experience which will include among other things, detailed information on site and office health and safety, perhaps preparing marketing documents, attending meetings and on site visits, working on measurement and costing documents as well as social activities and interaction with current graduates to see what their views in the industry are. This programme is an effective means by which to gain a comprehensive understanding of the role of a quantity surveyor, providing you with an insight to help you determine if this is a career you will aspire to in the future. Work experience profile We also have a small number of graduate opportunities for individuals with both cognate and non-cognate backgrounds within other areas of the firm. All graduates entering these areas would also join our National Graduate Development Scheme and work towards their RICS accreditation. Graduate Facilities Management As well as gaining experience and knowledge in a range of areas and working towards your RICS accreditation, the firm will fully support your development and application to become BIFM accredited. Graduate Taxation Surveyor Individuals joining our tax department join a small but well-established team where you can gain a range of experience in order to progress in your career and gain your RICS accreditation. ![]() ![]() The opportunity exists at Gardiner & Theobald to make whatever you want out of your career, the choice is yours!
