An interview...

with Nathan Barnett, G&T Project Manager

Nathan Barnett, in our Infrastructure Management division, shares his experience of our apprenticeship programme. From hands-on Project Management work to his inspiration to begin a career in the built environment.

What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship in this sector?

I was drawn to the dynamic nature of the construction consultancy sector and the opportunity to work with the teams that shape the largest UK infrastructure projects. Choosing an apprenticeship allowed me to gain practical experience while learning from industry experts at Gardiner & Theobald (G&T), giving me a strong foundation to grow my career whilst earning an academic and professional qualification.

How has this apprenticeship helped you develop your skills and knowledge?

This apprenticeship has been invaluable in helping me to develop a blend of technical and professional skills through both the academic and live project work. It has given me a strong understanding of supply chain management, procurement and project management. Working closely with experienced professionals has also improved my communication, problem-solving and adaptability - things I have found you learn best on the job!

"The most rewarding part of the apprenticeship is having the ability to transfer your academic learnings into direct contributions on the projects you work on."

What do you find the most rewarding about doing an apprenticeship?

The most rewarding part of the apprenticeship is having the ability to transfer your academic learnings into direct contributions on the projects you work on. It's satisfying to watch your ability to positively impact a project’s progress grow as you become more confident through the apprenticeship. Also, being part of a collaborative and supportive team makes the experience even more fulfilling.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in this sector?

An apprenticeship is an incredible opportunity to learn from the best in the industry while gaining practical on the job experience that reinforces your learnings. Make the most of all the opportunities presented and ask questions, build your network and grow into your role. This sector is vast, so stay open to learning across all the different services and functions so you can find what area you enjoy the most!

Project manager, G&T

How has the apprenticeship helped you grow personally and professionally?

Personally, I’ve become more confident and adaptable, which has positively impacted my decision-making and problem-solving skills. Professionally, the structured training and real-world exposure have equipped me with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver excellent outcomes for clients.

How do you balance hands-on work with learning and training?

It’s all about good time management and staying organised. G&T supports me with structured learning plans and mentors to make the balance easier. I prioritise tasks, communicate with my mentor regularly and stay consistent in both my project work and academic studies.

Has there been any standout moments during your apprenticeship?

One early standout moment on my first project at G&T was presenting my findings of a materials market study to the projects Joint Venture heads of procurement and supply chain, providing valuable insights that informed the projects decision-making. Another standout moment came when I was recognised in our firm’s bi-annual promotions communication, which celebrates career progression. On this occasion, I was honoured to be promoted to Project Manager.

My apprenticeship at G&T has given me invaluable experience working on multi-billion-pound infrastructure projects across the UK’s transport, utilities and energy sectors. Contributing to the supply chain management, procurement and project management practices on projects at this scale has been both highly rewarding and insightful.

During my time on these projects, I’ve carried out supply chain engagement, market analysis, procurement, supplier risk assessment and contract management for large scale projects. These experiences have strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills while allowing me to make meaningful project contributions.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I highly recommend it. The mix of live project experience and structured learning provides a strong foundation for career growth, offering real-world exposure and collaboration with industry experts. Looking ahead, I hope to take on more complex challenges in the infrastructure sector while mentoring future apprentices and sharing the knowledge I’ve gained.
