Challenge
East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust aimed to enhance diagnostic services at Buckland Hospital by establishing a Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). The objective was to deliver diagnostic activities away from acute facilities, thereby reducing pressure on hospitals and providing quicker access to tests for patients. The project involved multiple phases, including the installation of a mobile MRI unit, conversion of existing spaces into state-of-the-art diagnostic suites, and reconfiguration of unused areas—all within a live hospital environment. Ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing hospital operations while adhering to stringent timelines and budgets presented significant challenges
Solution
G&T provided Project Management services, overseeing the phased development of the CDC. In Phase 1, we coordinated the construction of a new external pad with power and data infrastructure to accommodate a mobile MRI unit, swiftly increasing diagnostic capacity. Subsequent phases involved converting the unused pharmacy into a cutting-edge CT diagnostics suite and reconfiguring space in the Urgent Treatment Centre to provide waiting areas and cannulation bays for MRI patients. Our meticulous planning and coordination ensured that all works were completed while adjacent areas remained operational, maintaining patient safety and hospital efficiency.
Outcome
The completion of the Buckland Hospital CDC has significantly enhanced local diagnostic capabilities, providing state-of-the-art MRI and CT scanning facilities. This development has led to faster diagnoses and treatments, reducing the need for patients to travel to other hospitals. G&T's effective project management facilitated the seamless integration of new diagnostic services within the existing hospital infrastructure, contributing to improved patient experiences and operational efficiency.
