Challenge

Kelvin Hall, a Category B listed building in Glasgow's West End, has a rich history of hosting exhibitions, concerts, and sporting events since its construction in 1927. Despite previous refurbishments that introduced sports facilities, museum collections, and academic spaces, a significant portion of the building remained underutilised. The challenge was to transform this iconic structure into a state-of-the-art television and film studio to support Glasgow's burgeoning screen and creative industries, while preserving its architectural heritage.

Solution

G&T was appointed to provide Cost Management, Project Management, and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services for the £10 million project. Collaborating with Reiach and Hall Architects, we oversaw the design and construction of a 10,500 sq ft multi-camera studio within Kelvin Hall. The development included production and editing suites, dressing rooms, meeting spaces, and associated facilities. Our expertise ensured that the project adhered to budgetary constraints and timelines, while integrating modern production amenities into the historic fabric of the building.

Outcome

The redevelopment successfully established a cutting-edge TV and film production facility within Kelvin Hall, operated by BBC Studioworks. This transformation has revitalised the building as a centre for cultural excellence, attracting major broadcasters and production companies. G&T's comprehensive management services were instrumental in delivering a project that balances historical preservation with modern functionality, contributing to the growth of Glasgow's creative industries and enhancing the city's reputation as a hub for television and film production.
