"Having such support is reassuring, helps build confidence and enables me to be the best I can be"

Kat is a graduate quantity surveyor.

What prompted you to apply to G&T?

At the age of 16, I took part in an Insight Day at G&T which enabled me to experience what Quantity Surveyors do and what G&T is like as a company. This sparked a great interest! I knew I wanted to go down this route and so I applied for and completed a number of summer placements at G&T which solidified the concept of wanting to become a QS and specifically, at G&T.

Describe a typical working day

The key tasks I undertake include carrying out site visits and payment assessments to value the works done to date, producing a payment recommendation from this visit and reviewing compensation events, both quantity and rate wise, which reflect the changes within the project. Other tasks I carry out include producing fortnightly cost reports, using CADMeasure 64 to obtain quantities to be transferred to cost plans and take part in progress and design team meetings.

What do you enjoy most about being on the Chartership Programme?

The support received by not only my supervisor but also G&T as a company - it is remarkable! Following on from very insightful seminars and assemblies, the presenters are always willing to help and provide additional information, assistance and guidance. Having such support is reassuring, helps build confidence and enables me to be the best I can be.

For anyone thinking of applying, what reasons would you give to encourage them to do so?

G&T is a fantastic company to work for - everyone is friendly, supportive and encouraging. I am just under a year into the Chartership Programme and I feel that I am at a comfortable and confident position regarding my APC, due to every three-monthly meetings with my supervisor and/or counselor, as well as catch ups with Victoria, the Chartership Programme co-ordinator, who ensure I am on the right path and is always there to answer any questions and help out where she can. Knowing support and guidance over the next year will increase to prepare me sufficiently to be able to sit and pass my APC is reassuring and makes the whole process a lot less daunting. Without a doubt, I would recommend applying to work at Gardiner & Theobald!
