From legacy labs to leading-edge learning

Refurbishment of a live academic building into state-of-the-art scientific facilities

Client

Durham University

Location

Durham

Sectors

Completion

2025

Challenge

The project involved the significant refurbishment of laboratory facilities within a live academic building, requiring a carefully managed approach to minimise disruption. The client needed to maintain occupancy for both staff and students throughout the works, making the sequencing and logistics of the construction programme particularly complex.

Solution

G&T provided Project Management services to oversee the successful delivery of the refurbishment within a fully occupied academic building. We developed and coordinated a phased construction strategy that allowed works to progress with minimal disruption to teaching and research activities. By facilitating close collaboration between the client, design team and contractor, we ensured clear communication, maintained programme momentum, and upheld health and safety standards throughout the live environment.

Outcome

The project delivered state-of-the-art laboratory spaces alongside upgraded academic support and communal areas. The refurbished building now offers a modern, flexible environment that enhances research and learning, all achieved while maintaining continuous occupation throughout the works.
