Challenge
The Rugby World Cup 2015 required extensive upgrades and preparations across 41 venues throughout the UK, including elite match-day stadiums and team training bases. With just two years to prepare, the challenge was to deliver fit-for-purpose facilities for 20 international teams, broadcast and media operations, and hundreds of thousands of fans—while balancing tight timelines, limited budgets, and a need for long-term legacy value across a diverse mix of existing sites.
Solution
G&T provided expert Cost Management services, collaborating with England 2015 (the RFU’s delivery company), stadium operators, local authorities, and project teams. We developed and maintained cost plans for both permanent and temporary works, benchmarked expenditure across venues, and offered financial controls to balance tournament-specific enhancements against legacy value. This approach ensured cost discipline while accommodating bespoke requirements such as team training zones, media centres and hospitality upgrades.
Outcome
All enhancements were successfully delivered prior to the tournament—ahead of opening matches at Twickenham—providing world-class facilities for players, media and fans. Venues now benefit from improved infrastructure that meets both operational and post-event needs. G&T’s cost-driven oversight enabled a high-profile, multi-venue programme to be delivered efficiently and transparently, ensuring long-term value and a smooth experience throughout the 44‑day global sporting event.
