St George's Hospital Renal Unit

A new benchmark for renal care in London

Delivering a state-of-the-art renal unit through collaboration, MMC, and clinical excellence

Client

St George's University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Location

London

Sectors

Completion

2028

Challenge

The project seeks to consolidate renal services from St George’s University Hospitals NHS Trust and Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust into a single, purpose-built 9,572m² facility at St George’s Hospital. Designed across six floors, the unit will house dialysis bays, high-acuity and inpatient wards, staff areas, and outdoor spaces, all requiring careful coordination to ensure clinical efficiency and flexibility. Key challenges include integrating the new building with existing hospital infrastructure via link bridges and meeting high clinical standards while targeting BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ and incorporating Modern Methods of Construction (MMC).

Solution

G&T is providing Project Management and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services, leading the scheme from initial feasibility in 2020 through RIBA Stage 4. The team overcame the complexities of service integration and pandemic constraints through a collaborative, digital-first approach to engagement. We coordinated multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with HTM and HBN standards, promoted sustainable design aligned with BREEAM targets, and addressed logistical challenges to enable future operational integration with the wider hospital estate.

Outcome

The planning application, submitted in September 2024, was unanimously approved by Wandsworth Council in January 2025, reflecting strong support for the project’s focus on patient care, sustainability, and design excellence. With construction yet to begin, the scheme is now primed for successful delivery using MMC and NHS ProCure23 frameworks—set to deliver enhanced clinical environments, greater accessibility, and a transformative step forward for renal care in the region.
