Challenge
Cockpit’s Deptford site required a transformation to maximise its potential, improving public accessibility while expanding facilities for makers, education, and community engagement. The challenge was to unlock underused areas within the existing building through a sensitive combination of extension and retrofit. The project needed to deliver new public spaces, including a café and event areas, while also increasing affordable workspace for artists and designers—all within a constrained urban setting.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management services, ensuring the transformation of Cockpit Deptford was delivered efficiently and within budget. By carefully balancing new construction with retrofitting, the project created an open and accessible ground floor with a new café and front yard, giving Cockpit a more visible and welcoming presence on Creekside. Additional education and community spaces were introduced to accommodate the growing demand for workshops and events, while purpose-built studios, workshops, and storage areas were developed to support makers in growing their businesses.
Outcome
The completed redevelopment has successfully redefined Cockpit Deptford as a thriving hub for creativity, learning, and enterprise. The new public-facing spaces provide greater community access, while the enhanced studio provision strengthens Cockpit’s role as a leading centre for makers. By delivering a cost-effective and well-planned transformation, G&T helped unlock the full potential of the site, ensuring a lasting impact for both local creatives and the wider public.
