Challenge
The transformation of the former Bank of Scotland headquarters at 37-39 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, into the Gleneagles Townhouse presented a complex challenge. The project involved converting two interconnected Category A Listed buildings, situated within Edinburgh's UNESCO World Heritage site, into a luxury hotel and private members' club. The objective was to preserve the historic architectural integrity while introducing modern amenities, including 33 guest bedrooms, an all-day restaurant, a members' lounge, co-working spaces, a rooftop bar with a private terrace, and a basement gym and wellness suite. Achieving this required a sensitive approach to balance conservation with contemporary functionality.
Solution
G&T was appointed to provide Project Management services for the Gleneagles Townhouse project. Our role encompassed overseeing the planning, design, and construction phases, ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints and historical preservation standards. We collaborated closely with the client, architects, and contractors to facilitate the sympathetic alteration, extension, and refurbishment of the historic buildings. Their expertise ensured that the development not only preserved the site's rich history but also integrated modern hospitality facilities seamlessly.
Outcome
The successful completion of the Gleneagles Townhouse has revitalised a prominent Edinburgh landmark, transforming it into a vibrant destination. The project has contributed positively to the area, reinforcing Edinburgh's reputation as a city that celebrates its heritage while embracing modernity.
