Challenge
Following the closure of the Southport Theatre and Convention Centre, Sefton Council aimed to create a modern, versatile venue to rejuvenate the town's cultural and economic landscape. The challenge was to design and deliver a state-of-the-art facility that could host a variety of events, attract significant visitor numbers, and stimulate local economic growth, all while integrating seamlessly with the waterfront setting.
Solution
G&T is providing Cost Management, Project Management, Employer's Agent and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services for the Marine Lake Events Centre (MLEC) in Southport. The £73 million development includes a 1,200-seat theatre, 2,400-capacity conference and exhibition space, meeting rooms, production facilities, and hospitality venues. We are coordinating stakeholders, managing budgets and supporting delivery of The Light Fantastic—a bespoke water and light show designed to enhance the waterfront.
Outcome
The MLEC is set to become a cornerstone of Southport's regeneration, expected to attract over half a million visitors annually and generate an estimated £18 million for the local economy each year. Beyond its economic impact, the centre aims to enrich the town's cultural offerings and serve as a catalyst for further development along the waterfront. G&T’s leadership has helped shape a venue designed not just to host events, but to reignite Southport’s identity as a year-round destination for culture, enterprise and waterfront life.
