Challenge
Northumbrian Water Ltd faced a fragmented Capital Investment Programme, with around 400 live projects under management and an external Project Management Office (PMO) model that limited control. The organisation needed to elevate its internal PMO maturity ahead of the next regulatory period and transition to a fully in‑house delivery capability—a complex strategic and operational shift.
Solution
G&T is providing Programme and Project Controls services, working in partnership with Stantec UK to support the transformation of Northumbrian Water’s internal PMO. The team has undertaken a comprehensive maturity assessment and is in the process of implementing a new operating model. This includes rolling out enhanced planning tools and embedding improved processes for cost, risk, resource, and change management. We are also actively supporting the recruitment, onboarding, and development of in-house PMO personnel to ensure the organisation builds long-term capability from within.
Outcome
The initiative is ongoing, but early indicators show significantly improved PMO maturity and readiness for in‑house capital delivery. Northumbrian Water is progressing towards a fully internal PMO model, with strengthened governance, robust processes, and enhanced control over portfolio management. G&T’s continued support is helping to embed a sustainable framework that positions the client for regulatory compliance and delivery excellence.
