Challenge
Paddington is one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs, with interchange between National Rail, four Underground lines and the Heathrow Express. However, the existing Bakerloo line ticket hall was congested and lacked step-free access, creating bottlenecks and accessibility issues. With over 66 million passengers annually, a more spacious, accessible entrance was essential to improve passenger flow and meet modern standards.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management and Employer’s Agent services for the design and delivery of the new ticket hall within the Paddington Square development. Our role included detailed cost planning, commercial programming and contract administration to support the integration of the Underground works with the wider commercial development. Our team ensured the facilities doubled ticket gate capacity, introduced two new lifts for step‑free access to the Bakerloo line, and created spacious, daylight‑filled circulation to the District, Circle and Bakerloo lines, all while aligning the build with the surrounding mixed‑use construction.
Outcome
The newly opened ticket hall now features 11 gates (up from 5 previously) and step-free lifts, dramatically improving accessibility and reducing congestion. The enhanced layout and commercial oversight have provided greater transparency and control throughout delivery. As a result, passengers benefit from a brighter, more intuitive interchange experience, with TfL and the development partners supported by strong cost management and coordination from G&T.
