Challenge
The University College London (UCL) School of Management sought to expand its facilities to accommodate a growing student body and enhance its academic offerings. The objective was to create a modern educational environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. The challenge lay in transforming existing office spaces within the prestigious One Canada Square building in Canary Wharf into a state-of-the-art business school, while minimising costs and environmental impact.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management services for the refurbishment of Level 50 of One Canada Square. The design, led by Nicholas Hare Architects, involved reusing components from the previous office fit-out, such as glazing, doors, and ceiling tiles, to achieve a sustainable and cost-effective transformation. The new 2,550m² space includes lecture theatres, seminar rooms, a student social hub, and executive education facilities, all equipped with advanced technology to support modern teaching methods.
Outcome
The project successfully expanded the School's capacity, allowing for an additional 1,000 students and the introduction of new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The innovative reuse of materials earned the project a SKA Gold rating, reflecting its commitment to sustainability. The transformed space now serves as a dynamic hub for business education, strengthening UCL's presence in London's financial district and fostering closer ties with industry leaders.
