Challenge
The Chester Northgate development aimed to revitalise a long-underutilised area in the city centre, transforming it into a dynamic mixed-use destination. The project faced significant challenges, including integrating contemporary design within a historic urban fabric, coordinating multiple stakeholders, and adhering to a tight programme and budget. The complexity of the site and the ambitious scope necessitated meticulous planning and coordination.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management services, overseeing the development from inception to completion. The scheme comprises a new indoor market, a six-screen cinema, office spaces, restaurants, and an 800-space multi-storey car park equipped with 40 electric vehicle charging bays and a living green wall. The design emphasises open streets and plazas that integrate seamlessly with green walls and natural timber-framed buildings, creating a welcoming and healthy environment. Our role was pivotal in coordinating the various elements of the project, ensuring that the development met its objectives while respecting the city's heritage.
Outcome
The Chester Northgate development opened in phases, with the new Chester Market welcoming visitors in November 2022, and the six-screen Picturehouse cinema opening in November 2023. The project has successfully transformed the city's historic core, providing a vibrant public square that links the new Market Square with the old Town Hall and the cultural centre at the Storyhouse. The development has revitalised the area, offering a mix of leisure, retail, and cultural spaces that cater to both residents and visitors. G&T's project management expertise was instrumental in delivering this complex scheme, ensuring that it was completed on time and within budget.
