Having been involved in the construction of Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres at The Christie Hospital in Manchester, The Royal Marsden in Sutton and at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, G&T has been appointed to provide Cost Management services for the new Maggie’s Centre at Southampton General Hospital.
G&T will work alongside RIBA Stirling Prize-winning architect Amanda Levete and RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows gold medal-winning landscape designer Sarah Price to carry out the project.
Located next to the hospital’s oncology unit, the new centre and gardens will transform the currently uninspiring concrete view from the hospital buildings, with the landscaping taking inspiration from the nearby New Forest.
The single storey centre will incorporate bespoke ceramic block walls and mirror facades with sliding glazed screen panels and a sedum green roof. Inside, movable walls will provide public and private flexible spaces to cater for a wide range of activities
Maggie’s was founded by the late Maggie Keswick Jencks and her husband, architecture theorist Charles Jencks. Each scheme has been designed by a leading architect to provide a ‘home away from home’ where people affected by cancer can find emotional and practical support.
