Challenge

Situated within the historic grounds of St Bartholomew’s Hospital—London’s oldest hospital founded in 1123—the project faced the complex task of replacing a 1960s brick structure adjacent to the Grade I Listed Great Hall. The objective was to create a welcoming, non-clinical environment for cancer patients and their families, providing emotional and practical support. The challenge lay in designing a contemporary facility that harmonised with the surrounding heritage architecture, all within a constrained urban site steeped in history.

Solution

G&T provided Cost Management services for the development of Maggie's at Barts. Collaborating with Steven Holl Architects and JM Architects, the project introduced a three-storey building characterised by its unique design concept of a "vessel within a vessel within a vessel." The structure comprises a branching concrete frame, an inner layer of perforated bamboo, and an outer layer of matte white glass adorned with coloured fragments inspired by medieval musical notation. Our expertise ensured that the project remained within budget while achieving the desired architectural and therapeutic outcomes.

Outcome

Completed in 2017, Maggie's at Barts now serves as a tranquil haven for individuals affected by cancer, offering spaces for counselling, relaxation, and group activities. The building's thoughtful design fosters a sense of calm and hope, enhancing the well-being of its visitors. G&T's cost management played a crucial role in realising this vision, delivering a facility that seamlessly integrates contemporary architecture within a historic setting to provide vital support services.
