Challenge
Maggie’s aimed to establish its third London centre within the grounds of The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, providing a tranquil, non-clinical environment for individuals affected by cancer. The challenge was to create a welcoming, thoughtfully designed space that would offer emotional and practical support, while harmonising with the hospital’s existing infrastructure. The project required meticulous planning to ensure that the new facility would serve as a 'home away from home' for patients and their families.
Solution
G&T was appointed to provide Cost Management services for the project. Collaborating with Ab Rogers Design and renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf, G&T oversaw the development of a steel-framed, terracotta-clad building composed of interconnected blocks, complemented by a separate garden house. The design prioritised natural light and views over the gardens, creating a serene atmosphere conducive to healing and reflection. G&T's expertise ensured that the project remained within budget while achieving the high-quality standards synonymous with Maggie’s Centres.
Outcome
The completion of Maggie’s at The Royal Marsden introduced a thoughtfully designed sanctuary that offers vital emotional and practical support to those affected by cancer. The centre's harmonious blend of architecture and landscape provides a calming environment that complements the clinical services of the adjacent hospital. G&T’s involvement was instrumental in delivering a facility that embodies Maggie’s commitment to holistic cancer care.
