Challenge
The University of Leeds aimed to create a state-of-the-art facility to unite its engineering and physical sciences disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and enhancing its global research profile. The project involved integrating a new seven-storey structure with the Grade II Listed Old Mining Building, situated in a constrained, heritage-sensitive site. Key challenges included preserving the historic façade, accommodating advanced laboratory requirements, and ensuring the building met stringent sustainability and accessibility standards.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management services throughout the development of the Sir William Henry Bragg Building. Collaborating with ADP Architecture, BAM Construction, and engineering consultants Arup and Curtins, we oversaw the financial aspects of delivering 16,280 m² of cutting-edge research and teaching spaces. The facility includes vibration-sensitive laboratories, cleanrooms, and a central atrium that connects the new build with the refurbished historic structure. Our expertise ensured cost-effective solutions were implemented without compromising on quality or the building's ambitious design and sustainability goals
Outcome
Completed in 2021, the Sir William Henry Bragg Building stands as the largest single investment in the University's history, providing a new gateway to the campus and a hub for innovation. The facility has enhanced the University's capacity for interdisciplinary research and attracted top-tier talent. G&T's Cost Management ensured the project was delivered within budget, achieving a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating and setting a benchmark for future developments in higher education infrastructure.
