Reuniting the Racecourse

Wrexham Association Football Club

Location

Wrexham

2026

Challenge

Wrexham AFC is aiming to redevelop the historic Kop Stand at the Racecourse Ground to meet UEFA Category 4 standards, enabling the stadium to host international fixtures. The challenge has been to design a stand with the ability to accommodate 7,500 spectators, with a mix of General Admission (GA), Hospitality and Premium GA seating, while integrating player facilities, media and retail spaces. Additionally, the project needs to reflect Wrexham's rich heritage, benefit the local community and provide enhanced accessibility for all fans.

Solution

G&T is providing Cost Management, Project Management, Employer's Agent and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services for the development. The new stand features seating with rails to allow safe standing, meeting UEFA's all-seater criteria while preserving the traditional matchday atmosphere. The design includes hospitality lounges, Premium GA accommodation, player’s facilities and retail spaces with modern design and technology to enhance fan and user experience. The external elevations will pay homage to Wrexham's industrial soul and celebrate Wrexham’s unique identity, and the Stand and supporting accommodation will deliver a spectrum of matchday and non-matchday experiences with a new public real plaza fostering community engagement.

Outcome

The Kop Development is set to transform the Racecourse Ground into a fully compliant, four-sided stadium, significantly enhancing the spectator experience and positioning Wrexham AFC to host higher-tier matches. The project aims to not only increase capacity but also deepen the club's connection to the community through versatile, multifunctional spaces. By actively managing scope, cost, and coordination, G&T continues to support the delivery of a development that embodies the club’s ambitions and community spirit — a facility being shaped by local pride, future growth, and enduring social value.
