NextGen Insight Seminar at Wellington Place, Leeds

G&T hosted the first NextGen seminar to be held outside of London at Wellington Place in Leeds, inviting NextGen professionals from across the built environment to explore the development.

The event

Guests were invited to hear from those who have worked on the development as part of an insight seminar and networking event. Hosted by G&T NextGen's Sarah Clarke, it was a great opportunity for guests to make new contacts and hear about the work that has been going on at one of Leeds’s most talked about commercial developments.

“The opportunity to gain this insight with other NextGen individuals was a truly invaluable experience, especially to hear the diversity of opinions and experiences of the people who attended.”

The presentations

The event kicked off with presentations. The NextGen heard from members of the project team including G&T Partner, Matt Mills, Sheppard Robson’s Tony O’Brien and Wates' Dan Miller.

Matt Mills introduced the event and spoke about G&T’s commitment to the next generation and the evolution of the programme of events in the regions. He talked about the importance of creating networks gradually and making genuine connections that can be carried throughout the lifetime of your career.

G&T’s James McGrael went on to speak about the long-term connections he has made while working on the Wellington Place scheme and knowledge they discovered throughout the development – ensuring that each building is built using the learnings taken from the last.

Sheppard Robson’s Tony O’Brien gave an overview of the project and how the masterplan came to fruition, starting out as a construction of cheese on a meeting room table and transformed into the buildings seen today.

Wates then discussed the key challenges and lessons learnt from being part of the development from the beginning, including the inclusion of a full curtain walling system for air and water tightness on Nos. 7&8 and the introduction of early steel frame design.

The presentations were followed by a tour of 7&8 Wellington Place then networking and drinks in a local bar.

The development

The Wellington Place development in heart of Leeds is one of the most talked about commercial developments in the city and one of the largest and most prestigious new city centre business quarters in Europe. It comprises over 1.5 million sq ft of commercial, retail, leisure and residential accommodation and it is estimated that one-in-ten jobs in central Leeds will be based at Wellington Place once all buildings are complete

G&T has been working at Wellington Place since 2008, providing Cost and Project Management services on Nos. 3, 4 and 7&8 Wellington Place. We have just started work on 12 Wellington Place and we are also providing Cost and Project Management services on fit-out schemes in Nos. 3, 5 and 6.

7&8 Wellington Place will be the home of a new Government Hub with HMRC, working with the Cabinet Office, will take approximately 378,000 sq ft at Wellington Place and is expected to bring over 6,000 civil servants to the centre of Leeds. This is the biggest ever commercial property letting in Leeds.
