Growing Connections: A Bonsai Workshop with Women in Construction

A beginner bonsai workshop isn't the obvious choice for a Women in Construction event, but some of the best professional connections happen when people step away from the day-to-day and share something unexpected together.

This Earth Day, the G&T Women's group traded blueprints for bonsai.

Alongside colleagues from Structure Tone and TPG Architecture, the team spent an afternoon doing something construction professionals rarely get to do: slow down and tend to something small. Each attendee chose their own tree and ceramic pot, then worked with expert instructors to shape, pot, and learn the basics of bonsai care. Everyone left with a living, growing result and the ongoing support to keep it that way.

The workshop was as much about connection as it was about craft. Bringing together women from three firms, across ownership, architecture, and project management, made for a natural mix of perspectives and the kind of informal conversation that doesn't always happen in a project meeting.

For the G&T Women's group, moments like this are part of a broader commitment to building community across the industry — not just within the firm, but with the peers and partners who make up the wider professional ecosystem. The relationships that define a career in construction are often forged in exactly these kinds of settings.
