Challenge
Designed by SODA Architects, the Boulevard Theatre was conceived as a groundbreaking, highly flexible performance space in the heart of Soho, marking the first new theatre to be built in London’s West End for over 50 years. The ambition was to create an adaptable venue capable of transforming seamlessly between multiple configurations—including traditional theatre, thrust stage, cabaret, and even a cinema—while maintaining world-class acoustics and audience experience. Delivering such an innovative and mechanically complex auditorium within the constraints of a tight urban site presented a significant challenge, requiring precise planning, specialist expertise, and seamless integration with the wider Walker’s Court redevelopment.
Solution
G&T played a critical role in the procurement of specialist theatre equipment, ensuring the technical complexity of the design was delivered on time and within budget. This included the coordination of the 360-degree rotating stalls, 270-degree balcony, moving acoustic screens, and blackout window blinds, as well as the bespoke wood-framed leather seating designed for maximum flexibility. Working closely with the main contractor and design team, we provided Cost Management and procurement strategies to align the theatre’s advanced mechanical features with the project’s overall delivery plan.
Outcome
The completed Boulevard Theatre is a landmark venue, offering an unprecedented level of flexibility in stage and audience configurations. Its ability to transform into multiple formats enables a diverse range of performances, from theatre and cabaret to fashion shows and film screenings, setting a new standard for immersive entertainment spaces. With G&T’s expertise in managing the procurement and integration of specialist equipment, the theatre successfully blends innovation, functionality, and luxury, securing its place as a standout addition to London’s cultural landscape.
