Challenge
The Worshipful Company of Brewers aimed to revitalise Brewers' Hall, their 1960s livery hall located in Aldermanbury Square, to better serve their ceremonial functions and generate income through commercial lettings. The existing building suffered from outdated infrastructure, inefficient layouts and poor thermal and acoustic performance. The challenge was to modernise the facility while preserving its historical significance, enhancing accessibility and integrating sustainable solutions within a constrained urban site.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management and Employer's Agent services throughout the redevelopment. The project involved adding three lightweight storeys above the existing structure, utilising timber and steel to minimise additional load. The façade was upgraded with high-performance Crittall windows and a contemporary pre-oxidised copper mansard roof. Accessibility was improved by lowering the ground-floor slab to street level and installing a new lift serving all floors. The building was connected to a district heating and cooling network, reducing its carbon footprint by over 30%.
Outcome
Completed in 2022, the refurbished Brewers' Hall seamlessly blends heritage and modernity, providing enhanced facilities for the Brewers' Company and four floors of high-quality, COVID-secure office space for letting. The project received a Civic Trust Award in 2025, recognising its excellence in architectural renovation and contribution to the community. G&T's comprehensive management ensured the successful delivery of a complex project that respects the building's legacy while meeting contemporary standards.
