Challenge
The Fruitmarket Gallery, a vital part of Edinburgh’s contemporary arts scene, was operating within a limited and ageing space that constrained its potential for exhibitions, events and community engagement. To better serve artists and audiences, the gallery needed to refurbish its existing building and expand into an adjacent, disused warehouse. This required a sensitive approach to heritage and design, with the additional challenge of delivering the project on a tight budget.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management services, helping the client to balance creative ambition with financial control throughout the redevelopment. We worked closely with the design team and contractors to manage cost planning, procurement and value engineering, ensuring that the project remained viable while preserving key design intentions. Our commercial insight was instrumental in securing best value and supporting informed decision-making at every stage.
Outcome
The renewed Fruitmarket has reopened as a welcoming, inclusive and versatile arts venue. The transformation has doubled the gallery’s footprint, introduced a new multi-use performance and event space, and significantly improved accessibility and back-of-house functionality. G&T’s cost management ensured the project was delivered within budget while enabling the gallery to realise its full creative and cultural potential.
