Challenge
One of London’s most prominent public spaces needed to be reimagined for only the fourth time in its 300-year history. The challenge was to respect the square’s heritage while creating a greener, more welcoming place able to respond to biodiversity loss, heavier rainfall and rising temperatures. The project also had to reflect the priorities of residents, businesses and visitors, following input from more than 7,000 people, while retaining its important memorials and improving accessibility, safety and year-round use.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management services throughout the £25m transformation, helping Grosvenor maintain control of its investment as the design developed and balance the project’s environmental, heritage, accessibility and public realm ambitions. The completed scheme has significantly increased planting, restored soil health and introduced wetlands, new trees and seasonal habitats. It has also delivered step-free routes, additional seating, public toilets, water fountains and improved lighting, creating a greener and more inclusive public space.
Outcome
The reopened square is now a climate-resilient urban garden offering more space for people and nature in the heart of the West End. Its restored soils can absorb up to 1.4 million litres of stormwater, while new planting and habitats support biodiversity and seasonal interest. G&T’s cost input helped translate an ambitious public vision into a deliverable £25m investment, providing a clear basis for assessing design and delivery decisions while protecting quality, accessibility and long-term environmental value.
