Challenge
The National Portrait Gallery faced several challenges as it prepared for its most extensive redevelopment since opening in 1896. Visitor access and circulation were limited, with the existing layout restricting movement through the galleries and overall visitor experience. The building’s historic infrastructure also required modernisation to meet contemporary environmental and accessibility standards. The Gallery remained partially operational during the early phases of the project, requiring careful coordination to minimise disruption to staff, collections, and the wider public.
Solution
Working in collaboration with Jamie Fobert Architects and conservation specialists Purcell, G&T led the coordination of design and construction teams to ensure the works respected the historic nature of the building while introducing vital modern interventions. Key elements included a new public forecourt and accessible entrance on Ross Place, refurbishment of existing galleries, and the creation of new learning and visitor facilities. Our management played a crucial role in maintaining programme and budget control, resolving complex logistical challenges, and ensuring that quality standards were upheld throughout every phase of the redevelopment.
Outcome
The Gallery reopened in June 2023 following a landmark redevelopment. The transformation has significantly improved public access, wayfinding, and educational provision, while restoring and revealing the building’s architectural features. The project has been widely acclaimed and was shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize. G&T’s leadership in project delivery has helped to create a revitalised National Portrait Gallery that balances heritage conservation with a forward-looking vision, securing its place as a leading destination for culture, learning and inspiration for generations to come.
