National Youth Theatre

From outdated premises to dynamic creative hub

Transforming facilities and enhancing accessibility for young talent

Challenge

The National Youth Theatre (NYT), a renowned charity nurturing young creative talent, had been operating from its Holloway Road premises since the 1980s. However, the building lacked adequate performance spaces and had limited accessibility, hindering the organisation's ability to fully support its members and engage with the community. The challenge was to renovate and extend the existing structure to provide modern, inclusive facilities that would double the capacity for professional studio space and introduce a theatre performance area.

Solution

G&T provided Project Management and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services, collaborating with DSDHA architects and other specialists to oversee the comprehensive redevelopment. The project introduced a new pavilion clad in green glazed bricks, housing the reception, a members’ hub, and space for community events. A 250-seat Workshop Theatre was added, enabling NYT to host performances for the first time. Structural alterations and the relocation of staff offices created naturally lit, flexible studios and workshops for both productions and commercial hire. Our meticulous management ensured the project was delivered on time and within budget, while maintaining the integrity of the original building.

Outcome

The redevelopment has transformed NYT's headquarters into a state-of-the-art creative hub, doubling its capacity for professional studio space and significantly enhancing accessibility with features such as level access, wide doorways, lifts, gender-neutral facilities, and a Changing Places Toilet. The addition of the Workshop Theatre has opened new avenues for performances, fostering deeper connections with the local community and providing young creatives with a platform to showcase their talents. G&T's strategic oversight was instrumental in delivering a facility that embodies NYT's commitment to inclusivity and artistic excellence.
