Challenge
The new Velindre Cancer Centre represents one of Wales' most significant healthcare infrastructure investments in over a decade, designed to improve cancer care for millions over its operational life. Procured through the Mutual Investment Model (MIM), the project demanded robust interface and commercial management, alongside a high-functioning Trust-side PMO capable of managing complex programme controls, risk, and governance across multiple delivery partners.
Solution
G&T was engaged to review and enhance the Trust’s internal project delivery capabilities providing PMO Transformation, Schedule Management, Risk Management and Commercial Management services. This began with an in-depth “as is” vs “to be” assessment of the PMO and project management structures, leading to the development of updated processes, policies and training to upskill internal teams. G&T was then retained as a long-term advisor, providing ongoing commercial, schedule and risk management expertise, as well as senior support to the Trust’s project leadership - ensuring consistent governance and delivery alignment with the MIM model.
Outcome
The project now benefits from strengthened controls, integrated reporting mechanisms, and a commercially disciplined delivery rhythm. These improvements have driven greater confidence across all stakeholders in the successful delivery of this landmark healthcare facility. The new centre will achieve at least a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and is designed as an all-electric, low-carbon building, incorporating circular economy principles, bio-based materials, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems, and a strong focus on off-site manufacture and waste reduction.
