Ninewells Hospital

NHS Tayside required a comprehensive programme of infrastructure upgrades at Ninewells Hospital, one of Scotland’s largest and busiest acute hospitals. The challenge lay in delivering these works—spanning electrical infrastructure, paediatric surgery, and neonatal care—within a fully operational hospital environment. Clinical continuity across vital departments had to be maintained throughout the project, requiring careful planning, phasing, and coordination.

G&T acted as cost advisor across all elements of the programme, which was procured through Frameworks Scotland 3. The electrical infrastructure project involved the installation of 12,000m of new cabling and containment to replace the hospital’s original 50-year-old network, completed in phases to avoid service disruption. In the Children’s Theatre Suite, six adult theatres were temporarily closed for six weeks to allow essential refurbishment, while two new paediatric theatres were constructed to enhance surgical capacity. Meanwhile, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit underwent critical upgrades to support improved infant care. We supported cost control, phasing strategies, and coordination to ensure each element remained on budget and aligned with operational needs.

The successful delivery of this multi-faceted programme has significantly improved infrastructure resilience and patient care capacity at Ninewells Hospital. G&T’s expertise in live healthcare environments enabled complex upgrades to be carried out with minimal disruption to frontline services. The enhanced paediatric and neonatal facilities, alongside modernised electrical systems, position NHS Tayside for improved service delivery and long-term operational efficiency.
