Challenge

The Plowden Building project involved refurbishing an existing campus building to create a central hub for staff and students while minimising disruption to live university activities. As part of a wider campus strategy, the works also needed to be completed within a single academic year, requiring careful planning to ensure the programme supported subsequent phases of development.

Solution

G&T provided Cost Consultancy and Employer’s Agent services, implementing a proactive procurement strategy to support the client’s programme and budget. An early enabling works package allowed the most disruptive activities to begin during the summer vacation, while enabling the design to progress in parallel as the existing structure was uncovered.

Outcome

The strategy enabled the building to be delivered within the required timeframe, supporting the client’s wider campus plans without compromising design or quality. The refurbished facility now provides open plan teaching, study and support spaces connected by a new two-storey lightwell and feature staircase, centred around a welcoming ground floor lounge and catering area for staff and students.
