Challenge

66 Portland Place, the Grade II* Listed home of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), has endured decades of piecemeal maintenance, leaving many of its systems outdated and its spatial layout unable to meet the evolving needs of members, staff, students and the public. The building currently lacks modern flexible workspaces, adequate public access, cohesive presentation of RIBA’s collections, and up‑to‑date infrastructure for fire safety, accessibility and sustainability. There is a clear need to preserve the building’s historic character while reimagining it as a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable destination.

Solution

G&T is providing Project Management and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services, leading a sensitive yet ambitious transformation of 66 Portland Place. Our role includes managing the programme, budget and a multidisciplinary team to deliver flexible workspaces, upgraded event areas and essential infrastructure improvements. We will ensure the integration of enhanced accessibility, sustainability and fire safety, while introducing new public‑facing features such as a café, a relocated shop and a dedicated treasures room — all within the building’s protected historic fabric.

Outcome

Once complete, 66 Portland Place will serve as a dynamic, inclusive hub for architecture. Staff will benefit from modern workspaces, visitors will enjoy improved access and facilities, and RIBA’s collections will be showcased in engaging new ways. The refurbishment will enhance the building’s civic role and ensure it is future‑ready as a welcoming centre for learning, culture and community. By delivering a thoughtful and forward‑looking transformation, the project will help reinforce RIBA’s position at the heart of the architectural profession and public discourse.
