Challenge
The former Ruby Ward inpatient mental health unit had become outdated, offering limited space, privacy and therapeutic benefit for patients—many of whom are older adults with complex mental health needs. The Trust identified the need for a new, purpose-built facility that could provide a safe, calming and dignified environment while enabling staff to deliver high-quality, person-centred care. The challenge was to deliver this within tight timeframes and in line with NHS design standards for mental health.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management services, working closely with the Trust and wider project team to steer the scheme from inception to completion. Our team ensured that clinical requirements, stakeholder expectations and programme risks were carefully managed throughout. We played a key role in maintaining progress through key milestones, facilitating clear communication between disciplines, and supporting the delivery of a modern facility designed to promote recovery, wellbeing and safety.
Outcome
The new Ruby Ward offers a high-quality, therapeutic environment designed specifically for the care of older adults with acute mental health conditions. With en-suite single bedrooms, therapeutic spaces, safe observation features and access to landscaped gardens, the facility marks a significant step forward in mental health care provision. G&T’s project management helped ensure the scheme was delivered on time, to budget, and to a high standard—supporting the Trust’s aim to provide compassionate, recovery-focused care in a setting that truly supports healing.
