Challenge
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) sought to expand and modernise its campus facilities to support its growing academic community and enhance its global reputation. The challenge was to design and construct a state-of-the-art building that would accommodate diverse functions—including teaching spaces, academic offices, research centres, and sports facilities—while integrating seamlessly into the historic Lincoln’s Inn Fields area. Additionally, the project needed to meet high sustainability standards and provide a welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Solution
To address these objectives, LSE commissioned the development of The Marshall Building, a 10-storey structure with two basement levels, designed by Grafton Architects. G&T provided Cost Management services, ensuring the project adhered to budgetary constraints while achieving the desired quality and functionality. The building features a variety of facilities, including the Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship, academic departments such as Accounting, Finance, and Management, flexible teaching spaces, and extensive sports and arts rehearsal amenities. The design incorporates a carefully proportioned façade of Portland stone and precast concrete, harmonising with the surrounding architecture of Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
Outcome
Completed in early 2022, The Marshall Building has become a central hub for LSE's academic and extracurricular activities. Its innovative design and high-quality construction have been recognised with several awards, including the RIBA London Award 2023 and the National Panel Special Award at the Civic Trust Awards 2023. The building's versatile spaces support a wide range of functions, fostering collaboration and enhancing the student experience. G&T's expertise in Cost Management contributed to the successful delivery of this landmark project, aligning with LSE's vision for a world-class educational environment.
