Challenge

The Stage development in Shoreditch aimed to revitalise a historically significant site, once home to Shakespeare’s Curtain Theatre, into a vibrant mixed-use community. The challenge was to integrate modern residential, commercial, and cultural spaces while preserving and showcasing the site's rich heritage. Balancing the demands of a £750 million development with the sensitivities of archaeological preservation required meticulous planning and collaboration among stakeholders.

Solution

G&T provided Cost Management, Project Management, Employer's Agent, Construction & Property Tax Advice, and Life Cycle Costing services throughout the project. Working closely with the development team, we oversaw the integration of 412 luxury apartments, 257,000 sq ft of office space, 60,000 sq ft of retail and leisure facilities, and the creation of the Museum of Shakespeare. The project involved the careful excavation and preservation of the Curtain Theatre remains, which are now a central feature of the development. Our expertise ensured that the project met its financial objectives while delivering a high-quality, culturally sensitive development.

Outcome

Completed in 2023, The Stage stands as a testament to successful urban regeneration, blending historical preservation with contemporary design. The development has created a dynamic new destination in Shoreditch, offering residential, commercial, and cultural spaces that honour the site's heritage. G&T's role was instrumental in delivering a project that not only meets modern urban needs but also celebrates and preserves London's rich history.
