Challenge
London's ageing Victorian-era sewer system, designed for a much smaller population, has been overwhelmed by the city's growth, leading to frequent discharges of untreated sewage into the River Thames. To address this environmental and public health issue, the Thames Tideway Tunnel project was initiated—a 25km 'super sewer' running up to 65 metres beneath the river, aimed at capturing and redirecting sewage overflows to treatment facilities. The project's scale and complexity required meticulous planning and coordination across multiple stakeholders and construction sites.
Solution
G&T provided Procurement services for this major infrastructure project. As part of the Commercial Support Services Framework, we contributed to the strategic procurement processes essential for the project's success. Our role involved ensuring that procurement activities were aligned with project objectives, timelines, and budgetary constraints, facilitating effective collaboration among contractors and suppliers.
Outcome
The Thames Tideway Tunnel is now operational, significantly reducing sewage discharges into the Thames and enhancing the river's water quality. G&T's procurement expertise played a crucial role in the project's delivery, ensuring that the necessary resources and services were acquired efficiently and effectively. This contribution has been instrumental in realising one of the UK's most significant infrastructure upgrades, benefiting both the environment and the residents of London.
