Challenge
The University of Leeds aimed to transform a key area of its Health Sciences Library to better meet the evolving needs of students. Situated within the Worsley Building at the City Centre Campus, the existing group study zones, reading room, mezzanine and IT suite lacked the flexibility, inclusivity and comfort required for contemporary, student-led learning. The challenge was to create an environment that moved beyond conventional library norms while enhancing accessibility and wellbeing.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management services to oversee the comprehensive refurbishment, ensuring delivery aligned with the university’s vision. The redesign embraces biophilic principles to foster wellness, with new roof lights introducing natural light, complemented by an earthy colour palette, sustainable materials and extensive planting. The reimagined layout promotes inclusivity and adaptability, with a strong focus on comfort, collaborative spaces, and new wheelchair access to the mezzanine level via a dedicated entrance from the Worsley level 8 corridor.
Outcome
The revitalised library now offers a vibrant, inclusive hub that champions student wellbeing and group learning. It provides a clear contrast to the quiet zones elsewhere in the library, offering a ‘Home Base’ that encourages students to engage, relax and return. The project has not only improved the functionality and aesthetic of the space but also delivered on the university’s commitment to creating accessible, user-focused environments that support a modern academic experience.
