Challenge

The University of Sheffield sought to create a world-class research facility dedicated to advancing low-carbon energy technologies. The goal was to provide a collaborative space where academics, industry partners, and technology start-ups could test and develop innovative energy solutions. The key challenge was to design and construct a highly specialised building that could accommodate a range of cutting-edge renewable energy systems, bioenergy research, and smart grid technology while integrating an advanced CO₂ capture facility for large-scale testing.

Solution

To bring this vision to life, the University appointed G&T to provide Project Management services. The Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC) was developed as a 1,600m² facility, featuring dedicated internal and external research areas, including 400m² of covered storage and 900m² of external space for large-scale equipment. The project required the installation and commissioning of 24 pieces of specialist research technology, ensuring the facility could support a diverse range of energy studies. We played a crucial role in managing the project’s complexities, delivering a highly functional research environment that met both academic and industry needs.

Outcome

TERC now stands as a leading centre for low-carbon energy innovation, providing state-of-the-art facilities for testing and developing new technologies. The facility enhances collaboration between researchers and industry, supporting advancements in sustainable energy solutions across multiple sectors, including healthcare, energy, and manufacturing. By offering open-access research capabilities, TERC enables businesses to trial and refine emerging technologies, reinforcing the University of Sheffield’s position as a key player in the transition to a low-carbon future.
