CIC Launches Essential Principles Guide Sponsored by G&T

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) launched the Essential Principles Guide for creating an accessible and inclusive environment for built environment professionals last night, sponsored by G&T.

The guide lays out six principles suggested by the Office for Disability Issues that businesses can adopt to achieve an inclusive environment.

These principles are:

  • To contribute to building an inclusive society now and in the future
  • Apply professional and responsible judgement and take a leadership role
  • Apply and integrate the principles of inclusive design from the outset of a project
  • Do more than just comply with legislation and codes
  • Seek multiple views to solve accessibility and inclusive challenges
  • Acquire the skills, knowledge, understanding and confidence to make inclusion the norm not the exception

The CIC held a reception at 5 Pancras Square (last year's winner of the CIC Inclusive Environment Award) alongside the Built Environment Professional Education (BEPE) programme, to launch the guide to a room of industry peers. The guide will help businesses set a benchmark to understanding how to adapt and become more accessible.

The reception was well attended with high profile speakers from across the industry and government including CIC Chairman Professor John Nolan, BEPE Project Board Chair Paul Morrell, G&T Partner and Deputy Chair of CIC Tony Burton, and the Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work Penny Mordaunt MP.

Tony Burton commented:

"G&T is delighted to support this important initiative which if taken up by built environment professionals will help us all to create more inclusive and accessible environments. If we get this right the  construction and property industry can deliver the same impressive levels of accessibility we saw at the  London 2012 Olympics."
