Challenge
The ABBA Arena was conceived as a fully demountable, state-of-the-art venue to house ‘ABBA Voyage’ – an innovative, immersive concert blending virtual and physical elements to bring ABBA back to the stage after four decades. The project required a large-capacity, high-specification performance space that could be dismantled and relocated, all within a tight timeframe and on a site previously used for temporary event parking at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London.
Solution
Working closely with Stufish Entertainment Architects and the delivery team, G&T provided Cost Management, Project Management and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services to support the creation of this unique 3,000-capacity venue. The hexagonal arena was constructed using a hybrid of steel and mass timber, offering both strength and flexibility. The central auditorium spans an impressive 70 metres, enabling uninterrupted sightlines and a fully immersive audience experience. Clad in a distinctive screen of timber battens, the structure combines technical innovation with sustainable materials, reflecting the project's forward-thinking ethos.
Outcome
The ABBA Arena sets a new benchmark for temporary performance venues – not only in scale, but in quality and adaptability. The modular approach extends beyond the auditorium to include a canopy-covered concourse with guest amenities, all of which can be dismantled and reassembled elsewhere. Through strategic planning and efficient delivery, G&T helped ensure the arena met both the artistic vision and logistical demands, enabling ABBA Voyage to captivate audiences in a purpose-built, moveable venue unlike any other.
