Challenge

As the oldest continuously working theatre in the English-speaking world, Bristol Old Vic required a sensitive yet bold redevelopment to modernise its facilities while preserving its rich heritage. The challenge was to create a world-class theatre experience that would open the building to the public in new ways, without compromising its historic fabric. The redesign needed to introduce a dramatic new timber-and-glass foyer, restore the Grade I Listed Coopers’ Hall, and integrate a new studio theatre—all while maintaining the operational and architectural integrity of the 250-year-old venue.

Solution

G&T provided expert Cost Management services, ensuring that the complex redevelopment was delivered within budget while achieving the highest quality of design and conservation. Working within a multi-source funding structure—including support from the Arts Council, Heritage Lottery Fund, and Bristol City Council—we played a key role in balancing financial constraints with the ambitious vision for the theatre. The redevelopment seamlessly blended historic restoration with contemporary innovation, enhancing both audience and visitor experiences.

Outcome

Bristol Old Vic has been transformed into a vibrant, accessible cultural hub, now offering not only world-class productions but also a new heritage visitor experience open throughout the day. The striking glass-fronted foyer allows the theatre to be seen from the street for the first time, reconnecting the venue with the city. The project has been widely celebrated, earning multiple prestigious awards, including RIBA National and Regional accolades, RICS Project of the Year, and Civic Trust commendations. Thanks to careful cost management and design coordination, the redevelopment secures the theatre’s future while honouring its remarkable past.
