Challenge

Bristol Zoo is relocating from its historic site in Clifton to a new, larger conservation campus north of the city. The development aims to provide world-class animal habitats, visitor attractions, education facilities, and research spaces. The first phase includes the delivery of new gorilla and crocodile enclosures, improved site access, car parking, and infrastructure. A key challenge has been delivering complex building and infrastructure works within a sensitive, woodland-rich environment, alongside managing the technical demands of specialist animal enclosures and drainage systems.

Solution

G&T is providing Cost Management services, supporting the project from the end of RIBA Stage 2. Working collaboratively with the design and construction teams, we have helped optimise the programme and manage costs through value-led design solutions. These include the introduction of precast concrete retaining walls and directionally drilled drainage systems to minimise disruption and environmental impact. Our input has supported key decisions that balance construction efficiency, sustainability, and the unique operational requirements of the zoo.

Outcome

Construction on the initial phase is underway, with completion of the full campus targeted for 2030. Once complete, the new site will serve as a state-of-the-art hub for wildlife conservation, education and public engagement—providing Bristol Zoo with modern, accessible facilities and enabling the sale of its original, constrained Clifton location. G&T continues to play a key role in supporting cost certainty and programme delivery as the multi-phase development progresses.
