Challenge
Emerald Headingley Stadium has long served as a shared home for two very different sports: Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos Rugby League Club. The venue needed modernisation to retain top-tier fixtures, meet growing spectator expectations and remain financially viable. The challenge was to carry out major redevelopment works in a live sporting environment, with minimal disruption to an intensive fixture calendar, while preserving the unique atmosphere of the site.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management, Project Management, Employer's Agent, and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services. The scheme included the phased demolition and reconstruction of the Rugby South Stand and the shared North/South Stand, delivering significantly improved sightlines, hospitality facilities and operational areas. A new link bridge was also constructed to connect the North/South Stand to the cricket pavilion. We helped coordinate stakeholders across two sports, ensuring clear governance, sequencing and delivery despite the live environment.
Outcome
The new stands have reinvigorated Headingley, blending heritage with high performance. The stadium can now host international cricket and televised Super League matches with confidence, supported by upgraded infrastructure that benefits players, spectators and broadcasters alike. Rather than compromise, the redevelopment has created a unified venue that respects its dual identity while securing its future. G&T’s role was central to delivering a project shaped by precision, collaboration and sporting ambition.
