Challenge
Govan Heritage Trust aimed to revitalise the Category A listed Govan Old Parish Church, a significant historical and architectural landmark in Glasgow, to serve as a dynamic cultural hub for the community. The project involved adapting and extending the existing structure to incorporate flexible spaces suitable for various functions, including events, exhibitions, and community gatherings. A key challenge was to modernise the facilities—adding offices, accessible toilets, and lift access—while preserving the church's architectural integrity and enhancing the prominence of the Govan Stones, a collection of early medieval sculptures housed within the church.
Solution
Collaborating closely with Govan Heritage Trust and the design team, G&T ensured that the project balanced contemporary functionality with heritage conservation. The team implemented strategic cost control measures and coordinated the integration of modern amenities, such as office spaces and accessibility features, within the historic fabric of the building. Additionally, we oversaw the creation of a new cloistered extension, linking the original structure with its modern addition, and facilitated the enhancement of the Govan Stones' display to enrich the visitor experience.
Outcome
The revitalised Govan Old Parish Church now stands as a vibrant cultural centre, seamlessly blending its rich historical significance with modern functionality. The successful adaptation and extension of the building have provided the community with versatile spaces for events and gatherings, while the improved prominence of the Govan Stones has elevated the site's appeal as a heritage destination. G&T's comprehensive project oversight ensured the preservation of the church's architectural heritage, the integration of contemporary facilities, and the realisation of Govan Heritage Trust's vision for a sustainable community asset.
