Challenge

The site of the former Law Courts in Manchester's Spinningfields had remained underutilised, presenting an opportunity to revitalise the area with a distinctive architectural statement.  The challenge was to design and construct a four-storey pavilion using sustainable materials, specifically timber, to house The Ivy restaurant.  This required innovative engineering to accommodate two cantilevers at either end of the building and to integrate the structure seamlessly into the existing urban landscape.

Solution

G&T provided Cost Management and Project Management services, ensuring the project's successful delivery.  Collaborating closely with the design team led by Sheppard Robson, we facilitated the prefabrication of the timber frame, which was then assembled on-site.  This approach not only expedited the construction process but also minimised environmental impact.  Our oversight ensured that the project adhered to budgetary constraints while achieving the desired architectural excellence.

Outcome

The completed Hardman Square Pavilion stands as Spinningfield's only timber structure, harmoniously blending with the natural greenery through external trellises, plant boxes, and gabion baskets.  It has become a focus point in the area, attracting visitors and enhancing the vibrancy of Hardman Square.  The project's success showcases G&T's commitment to sustainable construction and innovative project delivery.
