Challenge
Originally constructed in 1927, Kelvin Hall in Glasgow's West End had served various roles over the decades, including as an exhibition centre, sports arena, and museum. By the early 21st century, the building required significant refurbishment to meet contemporary standards and to find a sustainable, long-term use that honoured its historical significance. The challenge lay in transforming this Category B Listed structure into a multifunctional facility that could accommodate diverse activities such as cultural exhibitions, academic research, and public fitness, all while preserving its architectural heritage
Solution
G&T provided comprehensive Cost and Project Management services for the redevelopment of Kelvin Hall. Collaborating closely with Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, the University of Glasgow, and the National Library of Scotland, G&T oversaw the transformation of the building into a multi-use civic facility. Key interventions included the creation of a central 'Avenue' to improve circulation, the refurbishment of existing vaults to house sports facilities and museum collections, and the integration of modern amenities such as a state-of-the-art gym and teaching spaces. The project also involved the development of a new film and television studio, further diversifying the building's use
Outcome
The revitalised Kelvin Hall now stands as a vibrant centre for culture, sport, and education, attracting approximately 25,000 visitors each week. It houses Glasgow's largest fitness gym, an eight-court sports hall, museum collections, and research facilities. The addition of a film and television studio has positioned Kelvin Hall as a key player in Scotland's creative industries sector. G&T's strategic oversight was instrumental in delivering a project that not only preserved a historic landmark but also created a dynamic, multifunctional space for the community.
