Challenge
Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust aimed to enhance its surgical facilities by constructing a new 3,481m² building featuring three laminar flow operating theatres in an open-plan 'barn' configuration. The project encompassed recovery areas, 10 day patient beds, 14 inpatient beds, and associated ancillary accommodation. The development needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing hospital infrastructure via a covered walkway, while also incorporating a new sub-station, infrastructure connections, and comprehensive landscaping. Achieving BREEAM 'Excellent' certification was a priority, aligning with the NHS's commitment to Net Zero Carbon and sustainable construction.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management services, overseeing the planning and execution of the complex development. We coordinated the design and construction teams to ensure the integration of the new building with existing hospital facilities, including the construction of a covered walkway and new sub-station. Our expertise facilitated the incorporation of sustainable building practices, achieving BREEAM 'Excellent' certification, in line with the NHS's environmental goals.
Outcome
The completion of the Orthopaedic Centre has significantly enhanced the hospital's surgical capabilities, providing state-of-the-art operating theatres and patient facilities. The building's design supports efficient patient flow and staff operations, while the sustainable construction methods contribute to the NHS's Net Zero Carbon objectives. G&T's project management ensured the delivery of a high-quality, functional, and environmentally responsible healthcare facility.
