Challenge
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) sought to modernise the Compton and Edrich stands at Lord's Cricket Ground to improve spectator experience, accessibility, and amenities. The challenge was to replace the outdated stands flanking the iconic Media Centre without disrupting the Ground's historic character or the cricket calendar. The project needed to increase capacity, improve accessibility, enhance sightlines, and integrate modern facilities, all while maintaining the venue's unique architectural harmony.
Solution
G&T provided Project Management, Employer's Agent, Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services for the redevelopment, collaborating closely with architects WilkinsonEyre and other stakeholders. The new three-tiered stands increased seating capacity by approximately 2,600, bringing the total to over 31,000. They feature improved sightlines, integrated amenities, and enhanced accessibility, including wheelchair-accessible spaces and lift access at all levels. A connecting walkway behind the Media Centre links the two stands, facilitating better circulation. Sustainable design elements, such as the reuse of original seating and the implementation of a ground source heat pump system, were incorporated to align with MCC's environmental objectives.
Outcome
The redevelopment has revitalised the Nursery End of Lord's, offering spectators enhanced comfort and facilities while preserving the ground's historic ambiance. The project was completed on schedule, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the new stands were fully operational for the 2021 cricket season. The successful delivery of this project demonstrates G&T's commitment to excellence in managing complex, high-profile developments within live sporting environments.
