Challenge

The Lord's Media Centre, an architectural landmark completed in 1999, required significant internal refurbishment to accommodate modern broadcasting needs. The challenge was to upgrade the facility's functionality without altering its iconic external appearance, as it holds a 'Building of Merit' status within the St John's Wood Conservation Area. Additionally, the project needed to increase the internal floor area by approximately 15% within the existing monocoque aluminium structure, a complex and technically demanding task.

Solution

G&T provided Cost Management, Project Management, Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy and Construction & Property Tax Advice services for the £5 million internal refurbishment and remodelling of the Media Centre. Utilising BIM, the design process ensured precise coordination between all disciplines. A new, larger TV camera gantry was installed, facilitating coverage of four additional pitches and removing existing ground supports to maintain future flexibility below. In-depth engagement with stakeholders, including MCC, BSkyB, BBC and Channel 5, ensured that the proposals met international broadcasting requirements.

Outcome

The refurbished Media Centre successfully meets contemporary broadcasting standards while preserving its iconic exterior. The project enhanced the facility's capacity and functionality, ensuring that Lord's Cricket Ground remains a premier venue for international cricket matches. G&T's management facilitated the complex internal upgrades, balancing technical innovation with architectural preservation.
