Reimagining a national treasure

Modernising a Grade I Listed icon ahead of its bicentenary

Client

The National Gallery

Location

London

Completion

2025

Challenge

The National Gallery sought to sensitively reconfigure the ground floor entrance and improve visitor amenities within the Sainsbury Wing, a Grade I Listed building. The aim was to enhance the arrival experience and accommodate the evolving expectations of a modern, global audience. With the Gallery’s bicentenary celebrations approaching, the project had to meet an accelerated programme without compromising the historic integrity of the space.

Solution

G&T provided Cost Management and Project Management services to support the successful delivery of this high-profile cultural project. Our team played a key role in managing both the tight programme and the cost parameters, ensuring all works respected the building’s listed status. By working closely with the client and design team, we enabled interventions that preserved the architectural significance of the Sainsbury Wing while introducing contemporary functionality and comfort.

Outcome

The upgraded Sainsbury Wing has been completed to an exceptional standard, creating a welcoming, accessible and future-ready gateway to one of the world’s most visited galleries. G&T’s management ensured that the project met both time and quality expectations ahead of the Bicentenary, enhancing public realm connections while protecting the cultural and architectural value of the space.
